American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation promotes health and well-being of all dogs by supporting research in canine diseases and dissemination of canine health information.
The Foundation embraces the OneHealth model by supporting medical, physical, and social well-being of dogs and their owners.
RESEARCH SUPPORT
It provides grants and seed funding to scientists and researchers investigating causes of various canine illnesses, developing diagnosis methods and treatments, or engaged in the identification of disease prevention strategies. The granting process is rigorous and stringent involving a panel of top scientists and experts in the field.
The Foundation determines its funding priorities by gathering information from the AKC Parent Clubs as well as dog owners, breeders, veterinarians, academic institutions, and researchers. It raises monies from corporate sponsors, dog owner clubs, veterinarians, and through private fund-raising efforts.
Since 1995, the Foundation has funded over 550 grants totaling $40 million, making it one of the largest canine research funding institution in the world.
ADVOCACY
The Foundation uses its website, email list, traditional mailings, podcasts, as well as presentations at symposiums and scientific conferences to disseminate authoritative literature regarding canine health and research.
4-STAR RATINGS AT CHARITY NAVIGATOR
American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation is the only dog health organization making to the top ranks of the Charity Navigator rankings. It received 4 out of possible 4-stars in January 2014. This is the eight time, the Foundation has received the 4-star rating in the last 12 years. Charity Navigator gave the foundation top score for Accountabilty and Tranparency (score of 70 on a scale of 0 – 70).
In 2012, the Foundation spent, 80% of its budget is spent on programs and approximately 10% each on administrative and fund-raising activities.
